How to add an image

My friend Mike was wondering how to add an image.

Click on the image button, browse if adding an image from your hard drive, then select... you have to select whether you want the edge of the image aligned on the left (usually the default), centered, or on the right.

Click upload image.

If choosing an image from somewhere online, you have to paste the URL of the image (hint: often when you right-click on an image, you can copy the image link).

You can also paste code that's provided for you into the Edit HTML tab, rather than into the Compose tab. Sites that provide code ready-to-use are ones like ICanHasCheezburger.Com.

Flickr is another site that has code all handy for you to use: find a picture you like, go to the "All Sizes" page (there's a button) and select the size you want to use. Note: too large a picture will throw off the formatting on a blog with a narrow content column!

Here's one I took on our trip to Washington - we went to the big flight museum near Dulles Airport to see the REALLY big stuff:

There's more you can do with something called "Cascading Style Sheets" to add borders automatically, but this is the basics...

Closeup of a set of Eucharist vessels from St Nicholas that have been there since it the church was founded - they must have been donated, as they're dated from several years before the year ground was broken.

St Nick's is a small Episcopal parish in Elk Grove Village, IL. It was designed by a well known Chicago architect called Edward (Ned) Dart, who also designed the former Holy Innocents Episcopal Church. Both small missions merged on New Year's Day, 2007. We need program space, and we don't have a lot of storage space, and some duplicate items... so it's hoped these will find a home in a church somewhere.

I'm a terrible gardner - neglectful and unmotivated - but somehow the three small clematis plants I stuck in the ground last year made it through the winter and are growing all over the inexpensive vinyl trellises I stuck in with them.

Frankly, I'm amazed they survived - last year was a hot one and I wasn't good about watering them consistently. And I'm totally astounded that this one put out this huge purple flower.

I got a lot done today - mulched, composted, planted a couple of pepper plants and some strawberries, dug all the ingrown grass out of the "kitty garden, and planted new coral bells and catnip there.

And then David dug a hole and went and got Stuey's little "tea caddy" that his ashes were in and we put the little tissue-wrapped packet of ashes in... yes, got a little choked up as we dropped fresh dirt in, and then replaced the little "birdwatching" cat statue over the place.

There was no early start, and I had to take a couple of breaks when it got too warm, but I only have one more bed that needs mulch, and as it happens I've got one more bag of mulch for it. Hurrah.

David got up and cleaned out gutters, but left the orange 5 gallon bucket on the roof, prompting a "Mah bucket iz on teh roof!" moment.

You know, I've never felt the "passion for the fashion," but I find BravoTV's reality show "Project Runway," to be strangely addictive, even though I've never been interested in fashion or even in dressmaking.

It's the personalities that suck you in and make you want one to succeed fabulously, and another to go down in badly-designed flames.

The second designer to be dismissed, or "auf'd" as the folks at Television Without Pity call it, was Malan Breton. DRAT! Although my initial impression of him was that he was much too precious and pretentious, there was a very endearing quality to him and after reading his blog I found him to be much more sympathetic and interesting than before. But he was gone after his evening gown for Miss USA's run for the Miss Universe title was deemed too "heavy" looking, with ruching that didn't really succeed, although what he was going for was a very interesting and potentially flattering look. It did look rich, but the ruching was lumpy and not well executed over the bust. It might have been more successful if the ruching were sharp, interlocking pleats. Still, all that action around the torso and hips kind of detracted from the stated purpose, which was to make a smaller woman look taller. But I did like the glamor of the slightly off-centered "bustle" part of the ruching.

Listen to me, I flunked the sewing module in Home Ec in junior high. "Ruching," indeed.

Anyway. There was something that Malan said last night about how his mother rejected his attempts to show her his drawings for fashion when he was young that was inexpressibly sad. She basically threw them on the floor and told him never to do that again. It sounded like a rejection of who he was in addition to what interested him. At the end of the show, he expressed sadness and shame for leaving so early. It seems he's never had a lot of friends, and he felt part of something larger (perhaps for the first time), and now it was over. This made me tear up a little. Yes, the plain-faced fat tomboy who lives in jeans and never wears makeup felt sad for the winsome fashion designer with the dubious accent and the exaggerated mannerisms. I really felt for him; what a crushing blow to have to endure on camera. He held his head high and left with grace and humility, something I never would have expected based on my erroneous first impression.

Based on his bio, I (as a former outsider living in Utah) have a little more insight into Malan and his personality.

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Malan, 32, traveled the globe as a child, living in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia, California, Hawaii, Utah, Georgia and elsewhere. Named as one of 12 new designers to watch for on the New York runway by Women’s Wear Daily in February 2005, Malan has been designing since the age of 11. Inspired by a friend, one of America's foremost couturiers, he decided to create his own line drawing on the vast influences and experiences of his life.

Oh, Malan, if you lived in Utah... well, it would be the absolutely worst possible place for a person like you, no matter how old you were when you lived there.

My normal blogspace Blogula Rasa was down earlier, or I would have posted there. For now, I'm sorry about this development, because I think the wrong designer was sent away, ANGELA. What were the judges thinking? At least Tim has a blog of his own (a Movable Type one, no less) where he dishes a little. Still, I don't understand why Malan wasn't given a pass and Angela wasn't booted right "auf."

A new rock slab is growing at more than one meter a day on the Mt. St. Helens volcano in Washington, USA. The rock slab, growing since last November, now extends about 100 meters out from one of the volcano's craters. A recently made time lapse movie shows the rock slab growing. Pictured above, a helicopter examines the steaming hot rock slab late last month. Mt. St. Helens underwent a spectacular eruption in 1980 but has been undergoing a comparatively serene eruption since 2004 September. A new volcanic dome has been building which is now about 100 meters above the 1980s dome. The rock slab is visible from the Johnson Ridge Observatory on the erupting volcano.

Okay, new laptop computer, and I'm tinkering with layout and so on from Hello, after installing Hello and Picasa (Google products both of them). Then things are going to get even wiggier when I send stuff from Flickr...

One of the things that I never figured out before was how to get a simple line break in these posts from Hello's "Bloggerbot" image-sharing chat doohickey that sends posts to Blogger (to update this site, for example).

Apparently, it was too simple: I have to insert a

tag. A format that is deprecated by finer web gods everywhere. Silly of me not to think of it, since I'd noticed Blogger does some rather odd things with its code.

However, multiple images is easy: just add a || double pipe at the end of each caption, hit "enter", and the image is "queued." Do it several times, adding a new picture for each, and then hit "publish" when ready.

And there you have it. Multiple images and multiple paragraphs. It was driving me nuts because I'd have to open Blogger just to edit a big block of text into more reasonable paras.

So why didn't they make a simple "paragraph/queue image" button, instead of hiding this keyboard shortcut deep in a user help forum buried in Googlegroups? Don't know; I'm just happy to have figured it out.

And now, I shall contemplate the Zen of it.

We were accidental tourists that day in May... first to arrive after the accident occured, called emergency services, found people who had first aid experience, and tried to keep the two kids that were in this car calm. The driver had a few cuts, his friend had to be cut out. He got off with only a broken leg. The driver of the other car (a truck) looked fine, but eventually a doctor that happened by was drafted to get him into a neck collar and keep him calm before they could all be transported. There's a nurse under the white blanket, keeping a blood pressure cuff on the young man, because we had no idea if he was bleeding (internally or externally). The passenger door was bent in a sharp "V," pinning him in his seat and making it impossible to tell how bad his injuries were. It took an hour for them to get him out and on his way to the nearest hospital, which fortunately wasn't as far away as Seattle... but then, it was still half an hour away.

An amazing B/W image of a man who was one of the first survivors of the 7/7 bombing to emerge and be caught up in the media maelstrom. I remember seeing him on television that morning; he kept his head, made clear statements, and sounded like he's a member of the British legal system. And yet his face was so desperately sad and worried, even as he answered questions patiently and with great attention.

Since all the recent comments point toward similar sounding shopping sites, it appears that a spammer is laboriously trying to leave their droppings by hand.

This is not a good idea, spammer. Blogger is just too... slow for that to pay off.

For now, only registered users will be able to comment (not that I ever got that many on this site). If the spamming continues, I'll disable comments.

The spammer does get one half point for bothering to make relevant comments, however.

What do you think of them lilies, er, apples? I already bought the tote for myself so I can haul church-related crap and junk and files and music around with me.

More designs to follow - we're doing a classic car show in July, and I wanted people that are volunteering for it a chance to buy T-shirts to wear for the event and other projects or work parties we do.

I may have to move the one "joke" T-shirt to a different store, but I wanted at least one funny one on there. We'll see.

Coming soon - more general T-shirts and stuff with an Episcopalian motif. Such as "Pet me, I'm Episcopawlian" for a dog shirt. And more bad joke hilarity ensues.

Serenity Movie Sneak Preview May 5

You have to join the Browncoats to get tickets to the sneak previews, which will be held in one of 10 cities on May 5th: Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, Portland OR, Sacramento, San Francisco, Seattle.

The movie doesn't officially come out until September 30th: Joss Whedon is throwing the ravening fans a bone here. Come out and see the Big Damn Movie already.

In a miraculous development, Dr. Bruce Banner has emerged from a persistent vegetable state. Dr. Banner suffers from a variant of Oppositional Defiant Syndrome called "tantrumoid broccoline giantitis."

He is currently resting comfortably, but there is no telling how long he will be in remission. He might want to look into filing a Living Green Will so that his wishes are followed by his caregiver. It should be very simply formatted as the caregiver speaks only very limited English:

Japanese Garden. The teahouse is only used maybe once a year. I've never seen it open. On my big trip to the real Japan, I went to a famous garden in Nara... and the teahouse there was open. That was in the fall, and the colors were gorgeous. I really should scan those photos and upload them.

Suffice it to say, last night and this morning's commute were both from hell. I almost got stuck in a parking lot that had been insufficiently plowed. I was happy to see plows plowing and salters salting when I got came in today.

Oh, and next time I take pictures while using the snowblower, remember to put the compact flash card in the camera. ;P

King Tut Coming To Chi Town

"Twenty-six years ago King Tut captured the hearts of everyone," Mr. Hawass said in an interview. "This will capture the hearts of people again. It will bring peace, and strengthen relations between America and Egypt. King Tut is back."

The tour after Los Angeles would include Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Chicago and one other city. Mr. Hawass said he was negotiating to take the exhibit to Boston, Philadelphia and the Brooklyn Museum, but hoped it would be shown in Manhattan.

Sucks boo to NY, we get King Tut and you don't.
